Obstacles inside and outside of the workplace leave individuals who want to work, out of the economy. These obstacles can include lack of transportation, childcare, and/or adequate employee benefits/support and more.

Part time work often exacerbates the cycle of poverty because of benefit cliffs that lead to a lack of insurance/paid time off/etc that can allow one’s financial situation to be extremely volatile and unforgiving. 

All of these barriers indicate another way in which it is expensive to be poor.
